3 Days Danakil Depression Tours

Itenerary

The Danakil Depression in Ethiopia is one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth, known for its stunning landscapes, colorful hydrothermal fields, and unique geological features. Here’s a sample itinerary for a 3-day tour of the Danakil Depression:

Day 1: Mekele to Hamedela

Begin with an early morning departure from Mekele to Hamedela, a journey that typically takes around 4-5 hours. Enjoy the drive through the changing landscapes, from the highlands to the desert. Upon arrival in Hamedela, a base camp for Danakil Depression tours, rest briefly before visiting the vast salt flats. Witness the traditional salt mining process and see the camel caravans transporting salt blocks. Head to Lake Asale, a saltwater lake, to watch the sunset. The reflection of the setting sun on the salt flats creates a stunning visual effect. Return to Hamedela for dinner and overnight camping. Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian meal and prepare for an early start the next day.

Day 2: Hamedela to Dallol and Erta Ale

Depart early for Dallol to explore the hydrothermal fields. The area is famous for its vibrant colors due to sulfur, iron oxide, and other minerals. Marvel at the otherworldly landscape with hot springs, acidic pools, and salt formations. Visit the famous yellow and green sulfur pools, which are a photographer’s dream and a geological wonder. After exploring Dallol, drive to Dodom, the base camp for Erta Ale volcano. This journey takes around 4-5 hours. Upon arrival in Dodom, rest and prepare for the trek to Erta Ale. The trek usually begins in the late afternoon to avoid the daytime heat. The hike is approximately 15 km and takes about 3-4 hours. Reach the summit of Erta Ale, one of the few continuously active lava lakes in the world. Spend the night near the crater, witnessing the mesmerizing glow of the molten lava. Camp overnight at the volcano rim, ensuring you have warm clothing and sleeping gear as temperatures can drop significantly at night.

Day 3: Return to Mekele

Begin the descent from Erta Ale before sunrise to avoid the heat. Return to Dodom and have breakfast before starting the drive back to Mekele, with a stop for lunch en route. Arrive in Mekele in the late afternoon, marking the end of your tour.
